Before you play online, you need to configure the network settings on Broadband Adapter. (Both Japanese version or abroad version are available. But the network settings screens are shown in Japanese.)

It checks the connection to the offcial matching server, and shows your IP adress, possible or impossible of online modes in both God play mode and the quester play mode.
The official server is over and now we use IP connection mode, so this connection test always fails even if you can play online by IP connection.The English version of the Terms of Usage (legal disclaimer):
Settings for connecting your Nintendo GameCube system to the internet will now be established. If you are a minor, these settings must be established by your parent or legal guardian.
Once established, these connection settings must be saved to a Memory Card. 1 file and 3 blocks of space available are required to save a Network Settings file.
